Dermoscopy (also called Dermatoscopy or "epiluminescence microscopy") is a non-invasive test that uses polarized light at different angles to reduce surface reflections and allow a better view into the deeper layers of the skin.

This polarized light source is combined with a 9x magnifying lens to further increase the identification of skin cancers and other skin lesions.

Dermoscopy, in the hands of a trained specialist like Dr. Shaw, has been shown to increase diagnostic accuracy by up to 30% compared with naked eye examination. The use of dermoscopy reduces the frequency of unnecessary surgical excisions of benign lesions but also increases the detection of skin cancers.

Dr. Shaw is proud to be the first and still the only General Surgical Specialist to offer this service to the patients of Northern Alberta and Northern British Columbia.
